I started personal training (PT) with Chris in 2009. Prior to that I had played a lot of team sport but had never done weight training. I couldn’t believe the difference the training made to my strength and toning – even just doing a one hour session per week.

I have played field hockey for over 40 years and struggled with lower back pain and calf injuries. The strength and flexibility I have gained from my PT with Chris alleviated that completely.

For Chris, his first priority is my safety – he is always careful with my technique to ensure that I don’t injure myself. I have been training with Chris from Physique Transformations since January 2016 until July 2016. I was unhappy with myself for a long while and the crux of this was my issues with weight. My parents and I decided that it may be best that I seek the help of a personal trainer.
Chris emphasised diet and more importantly nutrition as a big part of realising my goal. He explained that you didn’t need a complete overhaul to be healthy and comfortable with your body. He also taught me that regular exercise was key and that if you did stray from the path once or twice, it wasn’t the end of the world. He was really supportive and enthusiastic.

To date I have lost 27kg and counting. I started at 127 kg and I am now at 100 kg, just 1kg away from my goal. I am now comfortable walking into a gym and wearing nicer clothes. Simply wonderful people working at this place, they are results driven but also realistic. After scans showing narrowing of the C5/6 disc space and thoracic scoliosis plus a problem with both the right and left rotator cuffs, add arthritic knees with a torn meniscus and spurs on the right ankle; I was a mess.

My injuries stem from my military career and my enjoyment of soccer. I have been told that if I don’t have surgery on my shoulders and knees I will suffer a debilitating future.

I decided that I wanted to treat my injuries through exercise and that’s where Joe kicked in. His exercise routines have provided structural strength and added flexibility. The exercise routines have progressively been amended to accommodate for my improvement.

The training was able to get be back on the soccer field and over the course of the training we have not just focused on structural and flexibility but also added routines to increase my speed. Of course there have been added benefits, weight control, improved immune system and a happier family.

It feels very cool that I can now mix it up with youngsters half my age on the soccer field, I can bench press my body weight (70Kg), this may not sound impressive but noting I couldn’t lift 30Kg without pain, I’m pretty pleased.

I can’t impress enough on the benefits I have gained from the training provided by Joe, add a healthy diet and regular maintenance through a Chiropractor or Physio or massage to keep your structural systems purring away.

Initial Health and Fitness Assessment

When you first visit us at Physique Transformations, we need to conduct a thorough Health and Fitness Assessment. During this assessment you will be placed through a targeted, well thought out and evidence based process. This is the best way to begin a health and fitness journey. Not to do so is a sure fire way to guarantee you don’t get the results you are after.

If don’t take part in a well thought out fitness assessment you can put yourself at risk of injury and a lack of progress due to poor programming. A program generated off a computer based of a limited field of data just doesn’t cut it.

So what do we test?

  • Weight

    Although there is a lot more to improving your health and fitness than merely losing weight. Weight still matters.

  • Waist to Hip

    Measuring the girth of your hip and waist is a quick and easy way of determining if you are holding weight in what could be called the “dangerous areas”. You definitely want to have a hip to waist ratio of 0.8 or below if you’re a woman or 0.95 if you are a man.

  • Body Fat Skin Folds

    Sometimes a drop in body fat doesn’t necessitate a drop in weight. When you exercise, it’s common to lose body fat and gain lean tissue at the same time. Keeping an eye on your lean tissue mass by using skin fold calipers gives us a clearer insight into what is happening with your body.

  • Flexibiity

    We test joint by joint. Often times, tightness in the ankle or hip joint may prevent someone from being able to do a whole range of leg exercises safely. This then limits progress because the best exercises cannot be performed safely and increase the chance of injury.

  • Structural Balance

    Testing the strength of muscle to ensure balance between pushing and pulling muscles, and between left and right sides of the body ensures that injuries don’t occur from an uneven loading of any one joint.

  • Cardiovascular Fitness

    2 Simple tests are done to give us your starting point for your cardio training so that your training can be adjusted accordingly.

Nutrition

There’s an old saying that abs are made in kitchen. Basically, what this refers to is the fact no matter how hard you train and no matter how well your training program is put together, you can’t ‘out train’ a bad diet.

At Physique Transformation we know this to be the case so getting clear about what you need to do when it comes to food is the key to burning off fat and building the body you want.

That’s why we use the flexible eating approach to fat loss.

Fact Number 1: ‘Diets’ do not work if they’re not sustainable.
Anyone can wire your mouth shut and have you run laps all day to drop weight, but the results will be a ‘skinny’ unhealthy body with no muscle tone, a body that will gain all the weight back in a very short amount of time. Anything that can’t be maintained won’t work so the method needs to be sustainable.
This is not our approach.

Fact Number 2: Calories matter
Forget all the fad diets that are out there, the science behind losing weight is quite simple. If you create a calorie deficit you will lose weight. Now of course there are numerous things that effect your calorie in & calorie out ratio but the fact rings true.
Create a calorie deficit and you will lose weight.

Fact Number 3: Is it realistic long-term?
For any nutritional strategy to be useful it needs to be doable long-term. Our approach doesn’t exclude any particular food groups but rather is designed to fit in with your way of eating by simply making a few modifications in regards to portion sizes of particular foods with a little more of certain foods and a little less of others.
This means that you maintaining you improved nutritional habits is doable long-term.

Fact Number 4: You need to know what you’re doing
Our flexible eating approach is something that we teach you to do. Having a ‘guru’ who tells you exactly what to do may help initially but the goal should always be for you to learn, know and understand the process so that in time you will be empowered with the knowledge needed to develop & maintain a healthy lean physique.

Once we have conducted your initial testing, you will have a program designed specifically to help you achieve your own goals and desires as fast as possible. From here, most people start to see and feel improvements almost straight away.

Retesting

The only way to know whether what your doing is working, is to retest. Whether you are looking to burn fat or build lean tissue, you must be continually assessing whether what your doing is working & so we retest body fat levels on a regular basis. This way we know if an increase or decrease in calories and or exercise is required. This constant ‘tweaking’ is what allows us to continue to get results when other trainers start to struggle.
